The most common choice for capturing the full temple complex and the sky. This range lets you include the reflecting pools, the causeway, and all five towers in one frame. On a crop-sensor camera, multiply by your crop factor to determine the effective field of view.

Standard Zoom · 24–70mm

A tighter composition that focuses on the central tower and the sun's alignment. Useful when the crowd is thick at the reflecting pools and you need to shoot over heads or find a cleaner line of sight to the prasat.

Telephoto · 70–200mm

Using a Tripod at Angkor Wat

A tripod is recommended for photographing the equinox sunrise, particularly for the pre-sunrise period when shutter speeds are slow. The causeway is crowded, and a large tripod can be an obstacle. Use a compact travel tripod that extends to eye level but folds down to fit in a backpack. Set up on the causeway or at the reflecting pools, and be prepared to move quickly if the crowd shifts.

Restricted

Composition — Framing the Central Tower

The composition of your equinox sunrise photograph should emphasize the central tower and the sun's alignment. From the causeway, the central prasat sits in the center of the frame, with the four corner towers flanking it. Place the horizon line — the top of the temple silhouette — in the lower third of the frame to give the sky prominence. The reflecting pools can be used as a foreground element, with the reflection of the central tower adding depth to the image.

The naga balustrades on the causeway serve as leading lines, drawing the eye toward the central tower. Avoid placing the sun in the exact center of the frame, as this can create a flat image. Instead, offset the sun slightly to one side of the central prasat, which adds visual interest and makes the alignment more apparent. If you are shooting at the pools, position yourself so that the reflection is centered in the frame.

Dealing with High Contrast

The equinox sunrise at Angkor Wat is a high-contrast scene — the bright sun and the dark temple silhouette push the limits of what a camera can capture in a single exposure. Your camera's dynamic range may not be sufficient to retain detail in both the sky and the temple. To manage this, use exposure bracketing: take multiple shots at different exposures and blend them in post-processing. Most cameras have an auto-bracketing feature that captures three or five shots at different exposure values.

Alternatively, expose for the sky and let the temple silhouette go dark, which can produce a dramatic image. If you are shooting in RAW, you can recover some shadow detail in post-processing, but be careful not to introduce noise. A graduated neutral density filter can help balance the exposure by darkening the sky while leaving the foreground bright, though it can be difficult to use with the complex silhouette of the temple.

The golden hour — the period shortly after sunrise — is when the light at Angkor Wat is warm and directional. After the sun has cleared the horizon and the alignment has passed, the light changes from deep orange to a softer gold. This is the time to photograph the temple's details: the bas-reliefs, the doorways, the naga balustrades. The warm light enhances the color of the sandstone, and the shadows are long and defined.

Move from your viewing position on the causeway into the temple's outer galleries to capture the light as it falls on the carvings. The central tower, lit from the east, glows in the golden light. The golden hour lasts about thirty to forty-five minutes after sunrise, after which the light becomes harsh and contrasty. This is the best time for photographing the temple interior, as the light is even and the crowds are still thin.
